BROAD: Feminist Writers Festival and Shakira Hussein

BROAD’s Sonja Hammer speaks to writer Shakira Hussein about her speaking engagements at this years Feminist Writers Festival which begins this Friday the 26th of August and Saturday the 27th of August in Melbourne. Shakira talks as well about her work as a Muslim Feminist and her experience as a single mother in a white dominant culture.

Shakira Hussein also chats about her book From Victims to Suspects: Muslim Women since 9/11. Shakira talks about how her Muslim and feminist identities influences her work.

‘Shakira’s talk alongside Eliza Vitri Handayani on the 27th is about:‘How are Muslim women fighting sexism and working for change? Eliza Vitri Handayani and Shakira Hussein explore the subject in their writing, while psychologist Monique Toohey helps patients access culturally appropriate services. In this session, they dissect the intersection of feminism and Muslim identity. With Catherine Balmer.’

‘The Feminist Writers Festival brings together feminist writers and readers to connect and strengthen the diverse writing communities around Australia. The festival aims to expand the themes and voices around feminism and women’s writing by offering a space for critical engagement and practical support for all feminist writers and readers.

The day-long networking day will be held on Friday 26 August at the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, in Melbourne’s CBD, and will feature sessions covering topics from feminist publishing and the politics of personal writing, to building feminist communities and mothering from the fringes. Writers such as Emily Maguire, Maxine Beneba Clarke, Monica Dux, Shakira Hussein and Clare Wright will speak from their experience in discussion with other writers and the audience – networking, interrogating, conversing and questioning what it is to be a feminist writer and reader.’
