The panel is called The Politics of Personal Writing a discussion held at this years first Feminist Writers Festival at the Network Day in Melbourne, Australia. ‘In 1969, Carol Hanisch wrote The Personal Is Political, arguing that personal problems are political problems requiring collective solutions. This concept resonated through the feminist movement and continues to inform. However there are costs to personal writing and women are often pushed to reveal all regardless of their desire to take a less confessional approach.’

Jessica Friedmann :
‘Has worked across student paper Farrago and indie titles Going Down Swinging, a cloth-covered button, and Dumbo Feather, with a stint at the Lonely Planet.
Her writing has appeared in The Rumpus, The Lifted Brow, Smith Journal, Dumbo Feather, Voiceworks, Arts Hub, newmatilda,Australian Financial Review, The Age, Luxury, and more.
Jessica’s debut book of essays, Things That Helped, is slated to come out in early 2017 with Scribe. Based on her experience of extreme and debilitating postpartum depression, the essays each take as object at their centre, and examine how imbued or embodied narratives can help when navigating your way through and out of illness.’
Maria Tumarkin :
‘Maria Tumarkin writes books (three to date, fourth on the way), reviews, essays and pieces for performance and radio. She teaches and translates, and collaborates with visual artists, psychologists and pubic historians. Her work has been published, performed, carved into dockside tiles and set to music.Maria currently teaches creative writing at the University of Melbourne.’ mariatumarkin.com
