Feminism, Government & Organisations, Music, News & Politics, Performing Arts, Society & Culture, Sports & Recreation

This week’s episode of BROAD is a special one – it’s NAIDOC Week!

article-1039931-002AE98B00000258-341_468x715Sonja Hammer and Lauren Stardust pay their respects and celebrate two milestone achievements for Indigenous Australian women: the election of Linda Burney as the first Indigenous woman in the House of Representatives and the life of unsung tennis legend Evonne GoolagongEvonne won a record-breaking 14 Grand Slam titles and this week is the anniversary of her historic defeat of Margaret Court at Wimbledon in 1971, making her the first Indigenous Australian woman to win the Grand Slam.

Sonja interviews Maria Twoomey, Project Director of Domestic and Family Violence Reforms for Women NSW. Maria talks about the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, a groundbreaking program that aims to protect victims and prevent domestic violence by coordinating information about perpetrators, and making it available to people at risk through police stations and support services. If the DVDS is successful, organisations like Victoria’s Safe Steps may adopt similar programs.

800px-Akino,_Katayama_and_MiyajimLauren introduces us to the Takarazuka Revue, a wildly popular Japanese all-woman theater company that was founded in 1914. Enjoy some Broadway-style glitz and drama, where all roles are performed by women – what more could you want from your musical theater! Lauren plays us Natsuki Mitsu‘s 2007 performance of “Last Dance” from the musical Elisabeth.

And Bad Bitches of History is back! Maria Lewis tells us all about Dr Marjorie Lee Browne, one of the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics and a renowned educator.
