BROAD goes (Kate) Bush, and meets Beloved Elk

Feminism, Music, News & Politics, Non-Profit, Performing Arts, Society & Culture

Black Lives MatterThis week’s episode of BROAD is dedicated to the Black Lives Matter movement. There will be a rally at midday on Sunday 17 July 2016 outside the State Library in Melbourne, which you can attend in support of activists in America who are fighting for their right to live safely and free from anti-black violence.

124717-3633-kate-bush2First up, Sonja meets Cathy Stevens and Adam Francis, organisers of The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever; an event celebrating the style and music of Kate Bush. Hundreds of fans will meet at the Shipley Pavilion this Saturday, dressed as Kate Bush, to learn and perform the iconic Wuthering Heights dance together, hopefully breaking the world record for the largest gathering of Kate Bushes!

You can register here to take part, with all proceeds of the day being donated to domestic violence prevention group Safe Steps. The final practice session before the event is this Thursday at Y Dance Studio in Thornbury. You can also buy your outfit online or on the day. Get ready to run up that hill.

Beloved ElkAlso in the studio are Tina Nguyen and Amy Wright from indie rock duo Beloved Elk. Sonja plays their tracks “Made Out of Glue” and “Beehive” (check it out on Bandcamp), and has a chat with them about their musical style and influences. Amy and Tina discuss feminism in the music industry, and how queer and female artists can support one another. Check out the Listen project to learn more. Beloved Elk will be playing at Sad Grrrls Fest in Footscray on October 1st. Keep an eye out at their Facebook page for future gigs and details about their upcoming album!
