Game on! BROAD does PAX and the British Film Fest

dscf2854PAX Australia is all packed up, but if you missed out fear not! BROAD’s Sonja Hammer was at the annual video game conference, and recorded stacks of excellent interviews and panels for your listening pleasure.

First up is an interview with self-described herder of nerds, Gdscf2852iselle Rosman. Giselle is the Executive Producer of The Global Game Jam, Business Administrator for Hipster Whale, the director of the Melbourne chapter of the International Game Developers’ Association, to name just a few of the many projects she’s involved in. Giselle spoke on the panel “Accessibility for Gamers with Disabilities: Where to Next?” and at the Geek Parenting Gathering at PAX this week. She tells us about the importance of accessibility in game development, and representation for disabled and mentally ill people in video games. The full interview will be available as a podcast very soon!

epona-and-shell-1-for-fbSonja was joined at PAX by Ruby Susan from JOY’s Triple Bi-Pass and The Informer. Sonja and Ruby caught up with indie game developers Shell Osborne and Epona Schweer, who spoke at the PAX panel “Designing for the Many: Inclusive Game Design Techniques“. Epona and Shell are currently developing a game together called One Night, and they talk about how they’re creating diverse stories through video games. You can listen to the full interview here!

We include a snippet of the PAX panel “Why We Won’t ‘Just Log Off’: Surviving Online Harassment“. This segment of the panel features Jennifer Scheurle from Flat Earth Games and Alanah Pearce of IGN, who describe their experiences of being harassed on the internet, and the responses they received when they went to the police. A warning: this segment contains descriptions of online harassment, stalking, and rape threats – a sadly common experience for many women who express their opinions online. Keep your eyes peeled for a podcast of this panel, hopefully soon to come!
