Day 2: Spice Girls – Spiceworld
No single red blooded human can deny the Girl Power squad that is the legacy of the girl group the Spice Girls. Having grown up through the 90’s I can tell you from experience what it was like to subscribe to the girls of spice – I had the Spice Girls polaroid camera, posters, movie; I remember the feeling of desperation as a child when I’d see some kind of affiliated merchandise that would almost always result in me pleading with my big sister to buy it for me .
Spice World opens up with one of the most iconic songs from the age – Spice Up Your Life, the record that made distopian future cities cute and adorable again. We all had our favourite spice girl growing up but after relistening to the fierce five’s second albumĀ (yes I did use a hairbrush as a pretend microphone during some/most tracks) I came to fully appreciate Melanie “Sporty Spice” Chisholm a whole heap more.
Mel C was the voice that really carried the group throughout their career which was surprising that she didn’t get some of the cooler verses or lyrics throughout Spiceworld. There are a lot of cringe worthy tracks throughout this record, Never Give It Up felt like it was never going to end and with a very lame production on the song I really want to know what the demo sounded like. Move Over still is a really rad tune and I’m not just saying that because of my time as anchor on Generation Next.
Spiceworld is an awesome album for nostalgia reasons and I’m sure that if you useĀ Spice Up Your Life in a party mixtape you will be the winning DJ of the weekend.
