We’re getting our game on with Jon Holmes (Outsports), Nikki Ayres (Paralympian), Gabrielle Tyacke (Auckland RainbowBreaks), Dan Syrus (Melbourne Chargers)

Welcome to Game On! JOY 94.9’s Home of Sport every Wednesday from 8-9pm where you’ll hear where you can get your game on! This show is all about you and how you can get your game on by showcasing where sport is safe, inclusive, welcoming and fun for the Rainbow community!

Sports Journalist Jon Holmes, Outsports, joins the show to chat about the incredible LGBTQ representation at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics. Outsports recorded 199 LGBTQ publicly out athletes who competed at the Paris Olympics, 64 of the 195 publicly out LGBTQ athletes took home a medal, and if TEAM LGBTQ was a nation, it would be 7th on the Paris 2024 medal count table, and 6th on the traditional gold-silver-bronze table! There are 42 publicly out lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer athletes at the Paris Paralympic Games and you can check out the fantastic list of athletes by name, sport, country, competition category (men, women, non-gendered), and gold, silver and bronze medals won.

We welcomed Nikki Ayres to the show with a huge cheer for making history in Australian sport. In just over seven minutes Nikki won Australia’s first-ever gold medal in Paralympic rowing with rowing partner Jed Altschwager in the PR3 mixed double sculls! In addition to being a super star on the water, Nikki is a legend on land selected to take part in the Australian Institute of Sport’s Thrive with Pride program and as an ambassador for Pride House-Paris 2024. (12:15)

We head across the ditch to New Zealand to speak with Gabrielle Tyacke Club Lead and Founder of New Zealand’s Auckland Rainbow Breaks – Auckland’s first LGBTQIA+Allies basketball club – to talk about how you can set up your own LGBTIQA+ sporting club! Gabrielle has done just that and shares insights into how you can successfully create your own sporting club. (20:47)

And can you ditch the dating apps and find love by joining a sporting club? Dan Syrus Melbourne Chargers says yes, yes you can! (32:40)

And who is getting their game on this week? Everyone involved in supporting the AFLW Season 2024! The season kicked off last week with games hold on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The game is going from strength to strength with an 11-game home and away season – a first in the competition’s history. Collingwood AFLW Captain Brianna Davey gave us a shout out to see you at the W! (44:18)

A big thank you to all of our guests for their support of an inclusive and supportive sporting culture and mindset, and encouraging everyone in the Rainbow community to get their game on!

And thank you for being a part of Team Game On!
