Welcome to Game On JOY 94.9’s Home of Sport every Wednesday from 6-7pm where you’ll hear where you can get your game on! This show is all about showcasing where sport is safe, inclusive, welcoming and fun for the Rainbow community!
Ben Drogemuller, Co-President – Sydney Frontrunners – a community running club that champions inclusivity and connection through sport shares “Marathon Training 101” – the essentials for anyone thinking about taking on the challenge of 42.2 kilometres. Ben also gives us the benefits of joining a running group and has a call out to anyone who might like to volunteer at the Sydney Marathon on Sunday 31 August as a marshall! Get involved and join the crew for a bevvy and some banter after the event! (2.20)
The All Gender Games is back for another season. It’s a soccer competition and training program for LGBTQIA+ folks in Melbourne Victoria. They are all about community, love for soccer and carving out queer-trans participation in sports. Plus, the Games serve a free banquet after every game. Cat Hoang, Director of the highly successful event now in it’s fourth year tells us more and encourages you to get involved! (21:36)
We then talk footy – AFL with Brendan McGarrigan, Committee Member of the Rainbow Crows – the official Adelaide Crows LGBTIQA+ supporter group. Brendan updates us on how you can head to the footy safely, have fun and proudly wear your Rainbow colours and we chat about a recent unfortunate alleged homophobic slur which has made the headlines this week and the upshot. (30.00)
And to close the show who is getting their game on? Professional footballer Josh Cavallo. Josh made history by coming out as gay in October 2021, becoming the first openly gay professional male footballer in a top-flight league with Adelaide United. He was recently a guest on Shaun Micallef’s ABC program Eve of Destruction where each guest brings on two items they’d save as their home is destroyed. One of the items Josh brought is a photo of him proposing to his partner Leighton Morrell at Coopers Stadium in Adelaide. Josh shares the importance of openly being your authentic self. (40:00)
A big thank you to our wonderful guests for their support of an inclusive and supportive sporting culture and mindset, and encouraging everyone in the Rainbow community to get their game on on our Pride In Sport Special!
And thank you for being a part of Team Game On
