Presenter: Daniela Incorvaia, YouthLink
Extensive research has identified disproportionate rates of suicide, self-harm, anxiety, depression, and substance misuse among Australian LGBTI young people. These issues are directly related to experiences of marginalisation, discrimination, family conflict, coming out experiences, and identity issues. Despite this recognition of LGBTI young people as a high risk group, mainstream mental health services generally have difficulty providing knowledgeable, inclusive, and engaging services to LGBTI young people.
This presentation aims to highlight YouthLink’s attempt as a government mental health service to address these gaps and barriers in service provision to LGBTI young people.
