In the late 80s and 90s, HIV and AIDS tore through the community, particularly impacting gay men. Whilst it was a virus with nothing else attached to it that caused people to become ill, we attached something really powerful to it that amplified or turned the gas up to full on the suffering that people with HIV were already experiencing.
The thing that we attached was stigma. …and if you think that stigma was largely isolated to a couple of decades and isn’t really an issue anymore … .think again.
