In 1993, Pauline Menczer was the best surfer in the world after being awarded world champion in Hawaii in 1993.
You can imagine after winning the world championship, sponsors would be knocking on Pauline’s door but she was probably too busy spending the prize money.
Hang on – we’re talking about 1993 – a world where there was little prize money and few sponsors in a sport dominated by males.
