A growing number of United States government websites have quietly disappeared, raising alarm among researchers, journalists and public policy experts.
Websites linked to USAID, including ForeignAssistance.gov, NeglectedDiseases.gov and ChildrenInAdversity.gov have gone offline, along with critical resources on HIV, reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ health.
A WIRED analysis found that at least seven sites were removed in two hours. In contrast, others have been intermittently taken down or replaced with messages citing “maintenance” under new executive orders.
So what does this mean for transparency, public accountability and the long-term implications of digital censorship?
Guest: Lauren Rosewarne, Associate Professor in Public Policy, Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne
