Condoman – a First Nations Superhero lead the fight against HIV/AIDS in the 1980s

Let’s head back to the early 1980’s when HIV first hit our shores. We all remember ads like the grim reaper and the role that played in preventing the spread of the virus – largely by scaring us, but another campaign involving a superhero had a massive impact on protecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities from the virus. The superhero was Condoman.

Condoman was born out of advocacy work done by Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood and was pivotal in the fight against HIV.

Guest: Geraldine Fela is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of History and Archaeology, Macquarie University
