Emily Buddle: Backyard Chickens

“Chickens – or as we affectionately call them here in Australia, chooks – have been a staple of backyard life for generations. But in recent years, their popularity has truly soared, with more and more people welcoming these feathered friends into their homes – or, at least, their backyards!

From providing fresh eggs to teaching kids about the circle of life, backyard chickens bring much more than just breakfast. But they also blur the lines between pets and livestock, raising fascinating questions about animal welfare, food security, and even biosecurity risks.

So, what’s behind this growing trend, and what does it say about the way we relate to the animals we live alongside?

Guest: Emily Buddle, Research Fellow in Humanities at the University of Adelaide

Presenter: Warren Andrew
