Mick’s Picks: Semi 1

Semi Final 1 is only a week away, so it’s only fair that I give my top five picks for Semi 1:

#5: Lithuania

Andrius Pojavis – Something

With a touch of a rock vibe, Something has a slightly different sound than others in this Semi final. Plus the lad can use his face to tell all sorts of stories. He could probably sing just by using his eyes and eyebrows. Those eyes remind me of what a clown might do. Very comforting scary.

#4: Belgium

Roberto Bellarosa – Love Kills

Speaking of eyebrows, Roberto pulls out a rip-snorter of a pop track with Love Kills. You just want to sing the chorus, over and over, until someone decides they want to give you a bitter pill. The question is, will Roberto kill it live on the night?

#3: Ukraine

Zlata Ognevich – Gravity

Ukraine gives us a video of immense beauty this year and Zlata’s song deserves it. Gravity is the type of song that you would hope to hear at Eurovision – a very beautiful women singing about love and butterflies, with a throbbing piano chord and vocal acrobatics. However, its ending just doesn’t do it justice. There’s something missing. Not that Europe will notice though, surely.

#2: Ireland

Ryan Dolan – Only Love Survives

This would have to be the perfect way to enjoy a night out at a club with a pint of Old Time Premium Lager. Like how I did that? Anyway, Ryan Dolan has a club-thumper with this one. Expect to hear it in gay clubs around Europe and possibly Australia and maybe even on JOY 94.9. Actually, Dave Audè should probably get his hands on this one…

#1: Slovenia

Hannah – Straight into Love

OK, so there’s a bit of bias here. Admittedly, one reason why I like this is because it is from the mother country. But it is another club-thumper, the type that we hope ends up in Eurovision. I can dance to it and sing along. Plus it’s exactly the sort of song to get everyone in Malmö Arena going crazy to. Another to keep an ear out in clubs for and one to request every week day between 5 and 6pm on JOY 94.9… unless it becomes part of the daytime line up, in which case I’ll play it on the Six at Six. Oh, and the man in the bath tub: Call me.
