What’s a Ghost Wife? That’s the haunting title of writer poet editor Michelle Dicinoski’s 2013 memoir. Michelle’s and two other writers’ newest works (Kelly Gardiner; Maxine Beneba Clarke) will be featuring in a public event, Undercurrents.
Ghost Wife traces Michelle’s physical and internal travels through coming out and romancing; and then running into the love of her life, US citizen Heather. Two women meet, fall in love, and want to marry. As Michelle discovers, no wedding in Australia will be legally binding so the two women head off to Canada to have their ceremony.
Along the way Michelle cajoles and persuades; and struggles with, her own parents who object to her lifestyle and choices. She also finds historical evidence of other queer couples and individuals who challenged the status quo. What does marriage mean? To Michelle, it’s a human right.
