Walking into the Bigness with ‘Uncle’ Richard Frankland

Aboriginal, Activist, Artist, Arts, Author, Musician, Writer

Emma and bryan are joined in the studios by playwright, activist, filmmaker, director, singer, songwriter, poet – man of many talents! – the amazing Richard Frankland.

‘Uncle’ Richard (as bryan insists on calling him) was an officer for the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and has been dealt his fair share of heartache and tragedy as a result.

Despite this, Uncle Richard has found healing through his culture, his family and through the process of facilitating Aboriginal voice through the arts – be it on stage, through poetry or through song and music.

Uncle Richard talks about Australian and Aboriginal politics, grieving, culture, pride, history all in the context of wanting to find a future that provides hope.

We dedicate this podcast to Richard’s ‘tough-as-nails’ mother, Aunty Tina (Aunt, we have our fingers crossed for you and hope that you are a finalist in the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards!), and to Jamie.

Enjoy! x
