Countdown
LISTEN TO PODCAST NOW
This week in the first of a series of shows, Marty and Venetia celebrate that great musical and cultural phenomenon Countdown – first broadcast on the ABC on November 8, 1974. Who doesn’t remember being glued to the TV every Sunday night at 6pm, waiting to see a new song from your favourite act, find out the week’s top ten, and see who was going to join Molly on the couch? Countdown had a huge influence on the music scene in 1970s Australia and brought music from all over the world right into our lounge rooms. This week we concentrate on the early years, 1974-76, and feature bands and artists like John Paul Young, Skyhooks and Sherbert, that went on to have an enduring relationship with the show. So do yourselves a favour, settle in to your bean bags and let the show begin.
