Winners of the Men on Men Art Competition for 2018 John Pastoriza-Pinol and Michael Elliott expose themselves (or their art anyway) this summer at The Laird, and joined Robbie & Dean on MAD Wednesday to tell us all about it.
Previously billed as ‘a celebration of masculinity’, 2017 saw Men on Men acknowledge the diversity of its customers and this year redefined the exhibition guidelines, welcoming Cis and Trans male artists to submit work expressing their experience.
Grand Prize winner John Pastoriza-Pinol is a contemporary artist and very much a neo-conservative rebel as his practice departs from the strict discipline of Naturalism (which froze nature into ultra-realistic documentation and taxonomy) and continues to investigate the dynamic relationship between man and nature, science and art. John is currently represented by Scott Livesey Galleries.
People’s Choice winner Mikey Elliott is an amateur digital artist often found sitting in Melbourne cafes with an iPad and Apple Pencil to capture the extraordinary in life’s ordinary moments. With an interest in abstraction and narrative, Mikey made his debut in Men on Men in 2011. His debut solo show That’s Not For Here was an exploration of awkwardness and discomfort. He’s currently working on his collection for his next show, That’s Not For Now.
The exhibition runs for three weeks over the peak period for Melbourne’s LGBT+ community. Exposed kicks off with the always-popular gender-inclusive open day on Saturday January 12th, where the community are invited to come and check it all out.
Proudly sponsored by JOY and Bummer.
