He’s a veteran of New Zealand and Australian reality TV programs (NZ Idol 2003 and The Voice 2012 in Australia), and we supported Sydney-based independent singer-songwriter Ben Hazlewood’s “Parachute” last year. Ben’s latest single, a heartfelt and mostly acoustic pop ballad, Loveless, is co-produced by one of the gurus of Australian music, Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum.
US-based out-and-proud Australian expat Sia has been writing killer hits for anyone who is anyone in the pop world for the last couple of years. It seems she’s still had time to save the best for herself, and if “Chandelier” is anything to go by, her new album due later this year will be well worth the wait!
Another Aussie doing big things internationally is Havana Brown, who has teamed with producer Richard Vission for her latest single. “Whatever We Want” is brand new, i.e. it is not part of her 2012 EP release. So as not to drive you crazy trying to work it out, the sample you’ll recognise is taken from the 2001 Basement Jaxx hit “Where’s Your Head At”. Interestingly, Basement Jaxx originally sampled Gary Numan’s 1979 song “M.E.” for the same riff.
There’s a 12-minute epic video to accompany Lady Gaga’s G.U.Y., the third single from Artpop. Closest in style to “Judas” from The Fame Monster, it’s sure to challenge both fans and detractors. We think it will grow on you with a few listens.
