As Melbourne gets into the Midsumma spirit, we keep building Melbourne’s most uplifting music mix with the latest tunes from queer Aussie artists.
Troye Sivan is the man of the moment, with ‘My My My!’ taking the musical world by storm. Its’s the lead single from his forthcoming album, the second on major US label Capitol. This out-and-proud singer from Perth has come a long way from his YouTube covers to the latest video, but his voice is still just as angelic. Watch him perform on Saturday Night Live this week (American time).
Another out-and-proud Aussie singer delivers new music this week. Sydneysider Nick Summerfield started singing in 2010 and has been quiet since releasing In Your Name in 2014. ‘Shelter’ is his proper debut single and is the lead track from an EP due later this year. It’s a song about growth, change and confrontation, with a video that might just tug at your heartstrings. We think you’ll enjoy this electro-pop ballad.
Things exploded for Daya when she featured on The Chainsmokers’ big hit Don’t Let Me Down after a very successful debut with Hide Away. Fast-forward eighteen months and this American singer has had her music streamed over 1.5 billion times, won a Grammy, and made it onto too many ‘Must Watch’ lists to name. New is the singer’s debut single on major label Interscope and promises to be just as big a hit in Australia as it already has been in the US and Europe. We’ve enlisted the work of Melburnian Ryan Riback to give ‘New’ a bit of a JOY pop, and we think you’ll end up dancing along.
Bailey, Jackson and Jed are Stripping on Sunset and they’ve just released their debut single. This Melbourne-based trio have dropped ‘Golden Star’ just in time for summer, and it’s dripping with soul, funk and a beat to die for. You might have this one playing in the background as you enjoy time with your mates around the pool, playing games with inflatable horses and splashing each other on a hot Melbourne day. We can’t wait to hear more from these lads soon.
DYGAF? Dua Lipa obviously doesn’t. And that’s OK. ‘IDGAF’ is the follow-up to the British singer’s triple-platinum-selling New Rules and drops just in time for her Australian tour in March. It’s a battle of red and blue in the video, demonstrating the internal struggle when you break up with someone. Neither side wins here – which side wins for you?
To wrap proceedings up for another week is the newest from Aussie DJ duo Mashd N Kutcher. The boys from Brisbane have taken the chorus from The Cardigans’ Lovefool and added verses written by Sydney-based singer-songwriter Sammi Constantine to make ‘Need Me’. This one is bound to be a summer hit.
