Kicking off our new music this week is a very young Australian who’s been on our radar for about 12 months. Starting just two years ago at the age of 11, Perth-based Anica Karu – professional name Ani-K – has managed to become a regular host of a community television children’s show, be a regular presenter on Pirate88 radio and produce a number of original songs. She’s now teamed up with Michael Paynter and Michael Delorenzis of MSquared productions to produce and co-write her latest single, ‘The Truth’, and it’s an absolute ripper highly deserving of a debut add to JOY’s uplifting music mix.
Aussie expat Betty Who was responsible for the viral hit ‘Somebody Loves You’ in 2014, with the video portraying a musical same-sex marriage proposal in a hardware store. The song’s success resulted in her signing with RCA in the USA and a successful debut album. Betty’s second album is in the works and the first single, ‘I Love You Always Forever’, is a cover of the UK and US top five 1996 hit written and performed by Welsh singer Donna Lewis.
Sydney-based singer-songwriter Starley has been around the world and back to find her sound, and now she’s hooked up with Tinted Records (part of Universal Music) to provide us with an excellent debut single.
LA-based New Zealand sibling duo Broods are back with ‘Heartlines’, the second single from their ARIA chart #2 debut album, Conscious.
American chart-topping artist Jason Derulo has put together a greatest-hits album entitled Platinum Hits. The compilation includes 11 of Jason’s biggest singles to date and includes one new single, ‘Kiss the Sky’, which we expect will be the 12th platinum-seller within weeks.
Joe Jonas’s band DNCE had one of the slowest-build hits in Australia that we can recall in a long time. Originally added to our playlist in October last year, ‘Cake by the Ocean’ didn’t make it to its peak chart position here in Australia (#6) until June this year. The follow-up single, ‘Toothbrush’, is already a top 10 hit in the US and has been waiting in the wings for ‘Cake’ to make a dignified exit from our airwaves.
Despite one top 20 and two top 30 hits at home, American singer-songwriter-actress Hailee Steinfeld has only scraped into our top 40 recently with her song with DNCE, ‘Rock Bottom’. Her latest single, ‘Starving’, is part of a second re-release package of her 2015 EP, Haiz. The song features help from American production duo Grey and Russian Grammy-winning producer Zedd. We think you’ll love this one.
Set your alarm and tune into Michael on the Six at Six for the newest songs to the mix, every weekday at 6am Melbourne time.
