Kicking off our new music this week is a very old song with a brand-new look. Neither Melbourne DJ-producer stalwart Andy Murphy nor New Zealand import Melbourne-based DJ-producer Jolyon Petch is a stranger to the JOY music mix. After sharing the decks for the last year or so at local institution The Emerson, and testing this song in bootleg form, they decided to recruit Melbourne-based singer Daniel Livingstone and completely rework the 1986 Paul Simon classic ‘You Can Call Me Al’. This one will catch you by surprise and then hook you in.

DJ Dan Slater and JimJam, both out-and-proud and both based in Sydney, are regulars on the gay dance-club circuit. Teaming up for the first time to produce an original new song, they have recruited singer-songwriter Nalaya Brown, who was born in Tenerife and is based in Ibiza. ‘Minute of You’ is contemporary dance-pop and comes with a swag of remixes to suit every dance floor, just in time for Mardi Gras. We have chosen Swedish producer Lennie Andersson’s LA Rush mix for you.

Also out of Sydney, also out-and-proud, we couldn’t be more excited to be featuring a new collaboration from US-born Bielfield and Australian drag superstar Courtney Act. ‘Dance Again’ is a homage to and was inspired by the late George Michael and his song ‘Never Gonna Dance Again’.

Melbourne-based DJ-producer Throttle returns to our airwaves. Despite the massive success and hype around his previous single ‘Money Maker’, sampling Ray Charles’ classic 1961 hit is daring to say the least. We think he’s nailed it. It’s quirky dance floor-fun and we think you will enjoy ‘Hit the Road Jack’.

DJ-producer Jordan Magro and singer-songwriter Boswell, both based in Sydney, have teamed up for ‘Think of Me’. It’s another excellent slice of vocal house from some up-and-coming Aussies.

American singer-songwriter Daya returns to our airwaves with ‘Words’, the third single from her debut studio album.

Norwegian singer-songwriter Sigrid is a brand-new artist for the world, and we think she is going to go gangbusters with her new single, ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’.

American singer-songwriter Katy Perry has called on both Max Martin and Sia to produce and co-write the first single from her forthcoming fourth studio album. ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ is dancehall-disco and features a guest appearance from Bob Marley’s grandson Skip. It’s pretty much guaranteed to be Katy’s next megahit.

American pop-rock hit-makers Maroon 5 have a new single, ‘Cold’, which we will be anything but that when it races up the charts.

After many successful remixes for other artists, British producer Digital Farm Animals is now producing his own music. ‘Digital Love’, featuring American singer-songwriter Hailee Steinfeld, is lots of bold, brash synth-pop goodness.

Last but never least, Jamiroquai – the British band formed back in 1992 and led by the enigmatic Jay Kay, originally an acid-funk group but subsequently scoring a huge number of pop, rock and electronic hits – are back with their first release in eight years. ‘Cloud 9’ is the typical Jamiroquai pop-electronica-fusion we love, and we think you’re going to like this one.

Set your alarm and tune into Michael on the Six at Six for the newest songs to the mix, every weekday at 6am Melbourne time.
