New music to weekdays (13 September 2017)
Getting us started this week is something ‘new’ from George Michael. First recorded in the late ’80s, ‘Fantasy’ was rerecorded last year in preparation for the reissue of Listen Without Prejudice. Sadly, George left us before it could hit the presses. Guitar genius Nile Rodgers adds his magic to this new version.
It’s been a while since we last heard from Ricki-Lee, but one of our Australian Idol faves is back with ‘Not Too Late’. The ex-Young Diva wrote the deep and meaningful ballad while in LA, and it marks her first new release in three years. Hopefully we don’t have to wait three more years for another track!
His debut album has already gone five times platinum, and out-and-proud British singer Sam Smith is backing up his successes with this new single. ‘Too Good at Goodbyes’ gets bigger every time you listen to it, thanks to the gospel-inspired backing vocals and big string section. We certainly won’t be saying goodbye to Sam after this one!
Heartthrob DJ Calvin Harris is loved for many reasons, but we love him even more because of his support of Australian DJ and producer GENERIK. Calvin found the Melburnian at Stereosonic in 2013 and has been producing big tunes ever since, including his debut, ‘The Weekend’, which topped the ARIA Club chart. The newest release, ‘So High’, will do exactly as the title promises -you’ll be throwing your hands in the air every time you hear it.
New York’s MAX has been performing since he was three, and his latest has taken the world by storm. ‘Lights Down Low’ has already been streamed over 78 million times and watched over 10 million times, and is charting like crazy in the US. The Riddler remix gives the original ballad just enough of a push to land it in JOY’s music mix.
It’s been a big year for Hailee Steinfeld, and it shows no signs of slowing down. For ‘Let Me Go’, the follow-up to the platinum-selling ‘Most Girls’, she teams with Swedish DJ, Alesso. Sounds OK so far, right? Wait for the refreshing country twang provided by American country duo Florida Georgia Line, and the plucky guitar from watt. Give it a go – sometimes the craziest combinations on paper are the best ones in your ears!
The wild boy from One Direction is back with the lead single from his forthcoming second album. ZAYN teams up with bisexual Australian singer and songwriter Sia to deliver ‘Dusk Till Dawn’. The video is a lush feature, with ZAYN being all broody as he follows Girls‘ Jemima Kirke around town. That hairstyle though …
Last, but certainly not least, is a total gem from Melbourne-based DJ, producer, pianist and drummer Tyron Hapi. The first release on a new label, ‘Anyway’ is the latest from this very talented 19-year-old. He’s been making music since he was 14 and has already been published on some of the world’s biggest record labels. He features the vocals of Mimoza in this punchy tropical-meets-house-meets-party thumper.
Set your alarm and join Zoe on the Six at Six for the newest songs to the mix, every weekday at 6am Melbourne time.
