Hold on to your headphones – it’s a massive week of new music!
Brit Calum Scott is soon to release a special edition of his debut album, Only Human. Ahead of it landing next month, the singer has dropped a new single. No Matter What is a deeply personal song for the out-and-proud singer-songwriter, telling the story of the loneliness and acceptance he experienced after coming out to his parents. It’s a beautiful song that will resonate with all corners of our communities. Be sure to also watch A Coming Out Story, where Calum talks about finding himself and understanding his sexuality through music. We reckon this’ll find a home in your heart.
Melbourne trio Emaar are back with a brand-new single. Robert Upward, Matteo Marinacci and Ellie Henderson deliver ‘Written in the Stars’ as a follow-up to 2016’s ‘Breathe’. Ellie’s powerful vocals add a rich texture to this bop with a driving beat, and the addition of a primary school choir gives the track that something extra. It’s a welcome return and we hope there’s more to come.
Eesha, Chevonne and Rachael are Queensland-based trio Mischief. They’ve been busy since releasing ‘Oblivion’ last year, winning the Best Pop title at the Australian Independent Music Awards and reaching the semi-finals of the International Unsigned Only Awards. ‘Eat Money’ shows the girls’ continuing ability to produce pop bangers that deserve to be turned up loud. There’s percussion, an earworm of a melody and lyrics that are made for singing along to – we think you’ll love it.
Have you been wanting a bit of house in your life? Just Kiddin have it for you with their new banger, Hysteria. The British electronic music duo of Lewis Thompson and Laurie Revell formed in 2010 and have made a name for themselves in the remixing space. Having gained popularity after the release of Indiana earlier this year, these lads are bound to make a mark on your radio.
Zara Larsson has turned the queen-ometer up to 100 in her newest. The Swedish singer has taken an outsider’s view of a relationship in ‘Ruin My Life’, delivering a trap-pop-tacular rollercoaster from beginning to end. It’s the lead single from her second Australian studio album due next year, following on from her gold-certified debut, So Good. Zara pulls out all the stops in the video, which seems to have been filmed in a house that could have been renovated by The Block contestants for a series of Big Brother.
Let’s put it simply: Ea Kaya is one to watch. The Danish singer snuck up on us with ‘Remedy’ and Tied Up earlier in the year, and her new track is a certified bop. Don’t Complicate It sees Ea (aka Christine Kiberg) being very clear about what she wants in a relationship. We’re warned not to complicate it because she’s already complicated – and we’re totally OK about that. This should be a summer hit.
Miriam Bryant and the creator of NEIKED, Victor Rådström, both grew up in Stockholm. It makes sense then that they know each other and have collaborated in the past to produce pop gems like ‘Finders Keepers’ and ‘Rocket’. It also just makes sense that their newest, ‘How Did I Find You’, is another pop gem with lyrics bound to get stuck in your head and a groovy bass line to keep you moving. The song’s lyric video takes a jab at the ghostly backing vocals while showing off Victor’s legs. We think you’ll find this is a grower.
Sydney-based singer-songwriter Nat Conway is back! The ARIA Club charting DJ, whose debut single, Everybody’s Free, was the 2017 Mardi Gras anthem, has jumped onto the Neon Records bus and teamed up with MoZella (responsible for Miley Cyrus’s ‘Wrecking Ball’) for So Loud. It’ll get its TV premiere on the Nine Network’s Hay Mate: Buy a Bale drought appeal concert this Friday.
She won the 2017 Queensland Music Award for Best Urban Song for ‘Wild Heart’, teamed with renowned LA-based producer Bryant Siono, had Lady Gaga and Rihanna’s Tim Stewart and Monte Neuble do some production work, and changed her name – ROMII has had a massive 12 months. ‘Cupid Love’ demonstrates a stepping-away from an urban sound into an RnB-pop space, and it works perfectly. There’s pedigree here, with ROMII having been writing since she was seven and attending the Griffith University Conservatorium of Music at eleven, and it gets us excited about what’s yet to come.
