It’s been a big week for our communities, so why not celebrate with a big list of brand-new tunes?
There were shrieks of excitement when ‘Stupid Love’ was leaked a month early, signalling a possible change in sound for Lady Gaga, going back to her Born This Way days. The lead single from her forthcoming sixth studio album, Chromatica, is a glittery banger made for your daytime enjoyment. Aussie director Daniel Askill was charged with creating the accompanying visual feast, which sees Gaga fighting “warring factions to establish a more compassionate world order”. Do yourself a favour and give it a look!
You might remember Alex Newell as playing trans character Unique on the TV show Glee. The gender-nonconforming singer has been featured on a number of tracks of late, as well as playing major small screen roles on Empire and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, but we haven’t had an original release from him for a few years. ‘Boy, You Can Keep It’ is his first bop since 2016 and we think you’ll be hooked on its flute. Be ready to sing along.
Queer teenager Isaac Dunbar made a splash in 2018 with his debut single, Freshman Year. Now, the sixteen-year-old singer-songwriter has decided it’s time to share a song with the world that he kept hidden until he was able to love himself fully. Chanelling a Sia feel, ‘makeup drawer’ piles on the foundation and blush until it hits its perfect peak with a smoky eye and lush, plump lips. The video for this pop delight also delivers, and we think you’ll be wanting more from this up-and-coming American.
Martin Garrix is a big supporter of the ‘little guy’, having featured a variety of vocalists on his tracks over the years. The Dutch DJ continues to highlight amazing voices from across the planet in his newest. Filipino-Norwegian singer Clinton Kane injects emotion, grit and depth into ‘Drown’, with a voice that you would not expect from a 21-year-old. This is bound to have you joining in, and we think you’ll be just as amazed with what you hear as we were.
We were first introduced to the Trolls in 2016, and Can’t Stop the Feeling has embedded itself into our heads since. The little people with the big hair are back for another adventure, as is Justin Timberlake in his role as Branch. Joining JT to sing all about it is American singer-songwriter SZA, with the pair dropping ‘The Other Side’. It’s not a hands-in-the-air bop like previous Trolls fare, but we still think you’ll enjoy the feeling.
English producer Jonas Blue had a busy 2019, pumping out tunes like What I Like About You and Ritual. He’s back with something new for the new year, bringing English singer Paloma Faith along for the ride. ‘Mistakes’ tells a story of heartbreak and loss, wrapped in a dance-pop package. You won’t make a mistake in listening out for this one during your workday.
Aussie band Sheppard, fronted by siblings George and Amy, have revealed that they will be releasing a new single every month for the next year, leading to a new album. The first of these singles is ‘Don’t Believe in Love’, with a chorus you’ll hang on to instantly. We can’t wait to hear what’s in store for these Queenslanders.
A week of partying cannot be complete without a bit of disco, and British producer Simon Marlin is bringing it. As The Shapeshifters, he has teamed up with CHIC singer Kimberly Davis for ‘Second Chance’, a song that sounds like it should be in the original Studio 54. Let your hair down, power on the mirror ball and get your groove on with this one!
