Neon Nights show #024 “The Docks”
“These sounds fall into my mind…”
Imagine the world before the internet, no such thing as mobile phones, and vinyl, cassette and CD’s ruled supreme. Nightclubs came and went, but some lasted longer than others and a small minority became legends that are still talked about today.
Nights such as Tasty, Razor, Freakazoid, Monkey, Fantazia, Dome, VMs and a million others. Not to mention the clubs themselves – Chasers, Inflation, Zuzu’s, Light Car Club, Mansion, Chevron and the legendary warehouse parties such as Red Raw etc.
I could mention Mandate, Pokeys, Zipper, Key Club, Club 397, 7th Heaven but that’s a show for another day 🙂
This show is dedicated to the classic Underground Music that was played at the clubs, raves and warehouses in Melbourne in the late 80s and 90s, some of which (unsurprisingly) crossed over into the mainstream charts.
City Of Melbourne is hosting a FREE Interactive Exhibition titled ‘The Docks‘, this exhibition delves into the contemporary history of alternative cultural activities held in the sheds at the Victoria Docks. At a time when the once-thriving working docks were seen as an abandoned wasteland, a landscape of cultural events were lighting the city.
This interactive exhibition visits the days of raves, dance parties and all that made Docklands a cultural destination in the 1990s.
Electronic music, circus schools, women’s warehouse parties, Queer stage spectaculars and dirt bike competitions were all part of this new scene. A dance move called the Melbourne Shuffle was born. In a pre-digital age these events were advertised through word-of-mouth and posters, and were the voice of their generation, a fusion of class, gender, music and identity.
This seemingly abandoned industrial wasteland was an artistic meeting point, a merging of subcultures, music revolutions and the making of Melbourne’s cultural empire that now reigns.
