It was never planned this way, but somehow all of today’s stories are about the changing face of homophobia in Australia; on the sporting field and in society at large.
We kick off with the Yarra Glen Football team, home to the River Pigs and ‘out’ gay footballer Jason Ball. In this short film produced by the AFL Players Association, we get an insight into the effect Jason’s coming-out had on the individual players, the club President (Jason’s Father David) and how it has galvanised the team.

Then Dean talks to Ryan Daniels from Footy Rhino. In a blog posting Ryan has written an ‘open letter’ to the first Gay AFL Player who may wish to ‘Come Out’. As an openly ‘Straight’ man, Ryan’s perspective as a spectator and commentator is encouraging for both the football and LGBTI communities.
The amazing team at Minus 18 have done it again, this time acknowledging the importance of ‘straight’ allies in stopping homophobia. Tonight they launch a new campaign titled “Dear My Year 7 Self” which shares real stories of young straight Australian’s who have experienced homophobic taunts or who have transformed their homophobia into love and acceptance of our community. Micah Scott joins us to explain further.

Literally having just stepped off a plane, Dr Lauren Rosewarne joins Dean to discuss the MenuGate Affair. Dr Rosewarne has more thoughts on the matter in a recent column for The Conversation.
“At its best, sport brings people together but does thinking about sexuality change the game?” That is the question that researcher Dr Gillian Fletcher is asking of LGBTI individuals who play sport. Specialising in ‘cultural change’ of organisations, Dr Fletcher would like to hear from you if you play any form of organised sport in Victoria.
