Last Monday the Laird Hotel played host to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Victorian AIDS Council and Living Positive Victoria.  It was at the Laird that the VAC was formed over 30 years ago and in 1997, following the introduction of anti-retroviral treatments, People Living with HIV/AIDS emerged to represent and advocate on behalf of those living with and affected by HIV.

The MoU between Victoria’s two HIV agencies comes at an interesting time politically with budgetary restraints causing State and Federal governments to re-evaluate the medium to long-term viability of the current HIV response.   Major changes will not be made prior to the AIDS 2014 conference in July as the eyes of the world will be upon Melbourne. However, there is a growing feeling that the shape of Australia’s HIV response will be very different in 12 months time.

Covering the event, Dean Beck presents the speeches given by Ian Muchamore, President of Living Positive Victoria and VAC’s President, Greg Carter. Then he chats with the Simon Ruth CEO of VAC and the Brent Allan EO of Living Positive Victoria, about the need for the two organisations to work together.

A High Court ruling handed down today has said the Federal government’s funding of the National Chaplaincy program is unconstitutional. Joining us to discuss this development is MCV journalist James Findlay who has reported extensively on the issue of chaplains in schools.

The Melbourne Festival of Magic is soon to open and Dean is joined on the phone by Australia’s best female magician and mentalist Cath Jamison. Her new show “In 2 Minds” is a heady ride into the power of persuasion, mind bending and trickery. In a spooky twist, Cath’s image came to life right before Dean’s eyes whilst chatting. (see pic)

Star Observer’s man in Melbourne Ben Riley joins us in the studio for a full round up of the week’s news.
