Our first program surveys a breadth of queer cinema to ask what makes a film queer and what queer films say about queer people.
B. Ruby Rich, who amongst her many accolades has been credited with defining and describing the emergence of New Queer Cinema in the early nineties, joins us to talk about the history of queer representation: from the barren wasteland of Hollywood’s golden era to YouTube today. In particular, we discuss what made the nineties so fertile for queer representation.
We’re also joined in studio by Spiro Economopoulos, newly appointed program manager at Melbourne Queer Film Festival (MQFF). He chats with us about what the changes in technology might mean for queer film and the festival circuit and why queer cinema has been so critical to a coherent queer consciousness.
