Focus on Queer Israeli Cinema

For some, Israeli cinema is more mainstream and gay than subversive and queer – despite the work of auteurs like Eytan Fox, whose films have exoticized the country’s landscape and politics to revitalise otherwise familiar stories of same sex love and desire. iff-demon_31584_poster

So how queer are films by Israeli film makers like Fox? This week on OUT TAKES we dive into the world of Israeli cinema to look at exactly how queer it can be. To help us understand a little bit more about the vibrant and edgy world of Israeli cinema, we’re joined by Richard Moore, the Artistic Director of this years AICE ISRAELI FILM FESTIVAL. Newly revitalised, the Festival features a selected range of the best Israeli contemporary cinema, independent film, and documentaries.

One such documentary is WHOSE GONNA LOVE ME NOW? – a compelling new documentary from the Heymann brothers. It chronicles the story of an HIV positive gay man seeking refuge from the religious community where he grew up in Israel. We speak with Barak Heymann about the documentary, and the 25 year road that lead to its production.

Essential viewing: Yossi and Jaggar (2002, Dir. Eytan Fox); Yossi (2012, Dir. Eytan Fox).

Hungry for more: Whose Gonna Love Me Now? (2016, Dir. Barak and Tomer Heymann).
