2017 – The Year Ahead in Film

This week on OUT TAKES we ushered in the new year by looking at some of the most anticipated films hitting our screens in 2017.

Our guest was Garth Davis, the Australian director of LION, which hits cinemas in Australia later this month. Starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman, LION tells the story of Saroo, a young Indian boy who getlion-movie-poster-dev-patels lost on the streets of Calcutta and adopted by a Tasmanian couple. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. We spoke with Davis about some of the film’s more meaty themes, and the fervent critical acclaim that LION has received around the world.

We also looked at a range of Hollywood titles slated to hit our screens this year. If you thought 2016 was the year of the (mind numbing put-you-to-sleep but oh-his-arms-are-nice) blockbuster 2017 is about to prove you wrong. We looked at some of the more anticipated mind numbing fare and naturally, turned our attention to some of the lower budget make-you-think queer fare that has everyone talking.

This program also featured reviews of some of the biggest boxing day releases: ALLIED, MOANA, SING and LA LA LAND.
