‘Moonlight’ with Barry Jenkins

For this program, the Out Takes team were joined by Barry Jenkins (pictured), the award winning writer and director of MOONLIGHT, which won Best Picture at the Golden Globes earlier this month and received 8 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

MOONLIGHT is the searing story of a young black man from Miami struggling with his identity and trying to find his place in the world. Rolling Stone called it ‘a masterpiece’, Playlist called it ‘an historic achievement’ and Vanity Fair called it ‘timely and timeless’.

We spoke with Jenkins about the political milieu of the film, and some of the films more critical themes: representation, identity and masculinity.
