Love is Love

For this loved episode of OUT TAKES, we celebrated the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival by turning our attention to films that locate themselves in the marriage equality debate by proudly saying: LOVE IS LOVE.

First we we’re joined by director Bentley Dean to look at his ground breaking new film,  TANNA, which is the first Australian film to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Set on the island of Tanna in the South Pacific, it depicts the true story of two star crossed lovers who defy their heritage in the quest for true love. We heard from Dean about what his ground breaking new film has to say about marriage, family and the triumph of love.

Next, we turned our attention to the new documentary from Eddie Rosenstein, THE FREEDOM TO MARRY, which charts the story of the same-sex marriage movement through the eyes of those who led it. We were joined by Rosenstein to look at what Australian audiences can learn from THE FREEDOM TO MARRY, and the importance of documenting the equal marriage movement on film.

Finally, we turned our attention to the new short film from Australian film makers Logan Mucha & Daniel Von Czarnecki, LOVE IS LOVE, which looks at the lives of four LGBTI families in Australia, and demonstrates that regardless of who you are and how you identity, love is all you need. We spoke with co-director Logan Mucha about his new short film, why it’s so timely, and why love really is love.

Essential viewing: The Freedom to Marry (Dir Eddie Rosenstein, 2016)

Hungry for more: Tanna (Dir Bentley Dean and Martin Butler, 2016)
