Defiant Lives: Representing Queer People with Disabilities in Film

This week on Out Takes we look at how people with disabilities feature in queer cinema. And here’s a spoiler: they rarely do. The question is why?

To help us understand why the representation of queer people with disabilities in cinema is so poor we speak with Sarah Barton, the director of DEFIANT LIVES, which screens in select cinemas later this month. DEFIANT LIVES chronicles the rise of the disability rights movement.

We also re-visit our chat with Daniel Monks, the writer and star of PULSE, which has been doing the Festival circuit around the country. PULSE tells the story of a gay disabled teenage boy, who changes into the body of a beautiful woman so that he can win the love of his best friend.

Essential viewing: Pulse (Dir. Stevie Cruz-Martin, 2017)

Hungry for more: Defiant Lives (Dir. Sarah Barton, 2017)
