Queer Pastoral Romances: God’s Own Country & Brokeback Mountain

We celebrated the theatrical release of GOD’S OWN COUNTRY on Out Takes by turning our attention to pastoral romance cinema: films that don’t mind getting a little bit dirty when they revel in country side love.

GOD’S OWN COUNTRY is the new film from director Francis Lee, which has been variously described as BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN but better. We think that this is pretty high praise. So we pit Ang Lee’s classic against GOD’S OWN COUNTRY and ask: are they actually the same? Can they be compared? And if they can, which is better?

Our guest was GOD’S OWN COUNTRY director Francis Lee. We spoke with Lee about his new film, the comparisons that critics are making, and the ways that queer cinema has changed since BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN was released.

Essential viewing: GOD’S OWN COUNTRY (Dir. Francis Lee, 2017)

Hungry for more: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (Dir. Ang Lee, 2005)
