Drawing Strength from Queer Cinema to Get YES Ready #2

At Out Takes we firmly believe that love is love, and that all people – wherever they fall in the wonderful rainbow spectrum that makes up our society – should be equal before the law.

That’s why we’re continuing our coverage of how queer cinema can get us YES ready. So for this special show, we turned our attention to a long list of documentaries that chronicle the world-wide move towards marriage equality.

In particular, we looked at THE FREEDOM TO MARRY, which tells the inside story of the equal marriage movement in North America through the eyes of those who led it. Our guest was Evan Wolfson, who has variously been described as the architect of gay marriage, and whose decades long fight for marriage equality is chronicled by the documentary.

We also re-visited our chat with Rory O’Neil – AKA Panti Bliss – who spearheaded the YES campaign in Ireland, and whose tireless activism is brought to life in Conor Horgan’s THE QUEEN OF IRELAND. We spoke with Rory last year when we looked at drag cinema – and couldn’t have known then how eerily pertinent some of what he had to say about campaigning for a YES vote would be!

Essential viewing: The Freedom to Marry (Dir. Eddie Rosenstein, 2016)

Hungry for More: The Queen of Ireland (Dir. Conor Horgan, 2015)
