Tom of Finland: a Cinematic Legacy

For this program, the Out Takes team celebrated the theatrical release of TOM OF FINLAND ahead of its national theatrical release with our special guest TOM OF FINLAND director, Dome Karukoski. TOM OF FINLAND is the new Finnish biopic that explores the life of gay fetish artist Touko Laaksonan, and the story behind his seminal and influential work.

We spoke with Dome about his new film, and why now is the right time for a film celebrating the life and work Touko Laaksonan. We also looked at how his work has shaped queer culture, and in particular queer cinema, by spotlighting some of the most notable films to be influenced by or reminiscent of his work.
