Transgender & Gender Diverse Representation

At Out Takes, we regularly discuss the idea of representation, particularly for the LGBTIQ community in film. For this program, we were fortunate to have three local guests join us to tell us why it it so important to share Transgender & Gender Diverse stories and see them on the big screen.

First up was Toni Paynter, an out and proud Trans woman with a strong connection to her community, including being a volunteer with JOY 94.9. Toni spoke to us about her journey of sharing her story with her first short film, ‘The Emergence of Rainbow T’, which is screening as part of this years tilde film festival.

tilde is Melbourne’s international film festival created to showcase and support the work of trans and gender diverse filmmakers along with works that have trans and gender diverse content. Their aim is to showcase films that celebrate the stories and perspectives of the trans and gender diverse communities, to provide opportunities to trans and gender diverse filmmakers and to celebrate diverse representations of gender. We were joined in the studio by Festival Director Louise Malcolm and Programmer Lillian Mae Bell to look at the importance of gender diverse, trans and intersex onscreen representation alongside some of the program highlights including a range of local and international documentaries, features and short films plus a musical starring a post-humanist rabbit.
