For this OUT TAKES, we continued our ‘queering’ of modern Australian cinema by exploring the way that Australian films represent LGBT lives, ex
periences and sexualities.
To begin, we revisited a recent panel discussion hosted by Out Takes co-presenter Daniel White, which brought together minds from across the Australian film industry to explore the importance of queer representation, and challenges impeding the fair, accurate and intersectional representa
tion of LGBT lives in Australian film. Held at the inaugural Better Together conference, the panel featured the participation of iconic Australian film maker Ana Kokkinos, Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason, Tilde co-founder Cerise Howard, Film Victoria CEO Caroline Pitcher, author Stuart Richards, and GLAAD’s Ross Murray.
We also spoke with SWEET COUNTRY director Warwick Thornton about his new film, and the importance of telling accurate and nuanced Australian stories on the big screen. SWEET COUNTRY opens in cinemas nationally this week.
