French Queer Cinema

With the 2018 Alliance Française French Film Festival back in Melbourne, the Out Takes team took this as an opportunity to look at the history and impact that French queer cinema has had and take a closer look at the exciting selection of LGBTIQ films on offer at this years festival. Our very special guest was journalist, author, teacher, activist and screenwriter of the new French queer classic B.P.M, Philippe Mangeot (pictured).

B.P.M. (Beats Per Minute) was the Grand Jury Prize Winner at the Cannes Film Festival and Queer Palm at Cannes in 2017. Director Robin Campillo and Magonet draw on their own experiences as ACT UP members in Paris in the early ‘90s to bring us this tale of love, life, dancing and death. We spoke to Mangonet about how he became an ‘accidental’ screenwritier, the importance of continuing to tell stories regarding the queer community’s experience of HIV/AIDS and how looking back on this time in his life has shaped how he see’s his future and that of the next generation of LGBTIQ storytellers.

B.P.M. is also screening at the 2018 Melbourne Queer Film Festival and in cinemas across Australia in May.
