For this week on Out Takes, we’re talking about documentaries again but this time specifically those that take a look behind the scenes of Women In Pop Music; think In Bed With Madonna, Homecoming by Beyonce, Five Foot Two by Lady Gaga and Katy Perry’s Part of Me. We were also excited to discuss a new title in the mix too – Charli XCX: Alone Together, which is in Australian cinemas from June 2 – 5 only.
Filmed at Charli’s home during the pandemic in 2020, the film’s chronicles the recording of Charli’s album ‘How I’m Feeling Now’, which she decided to record during lockdown in an extremely ambitious and absurd 40 days. The unique creative boundaries take Charli on a creative and emotional journey like no other, pushing her to the brink of disaster as she is forced to confront mental health issues, rekindle her relationship and connect with vulnerable LGBTQ+ fans in need.
To discuss the film we were joined by Bradley Bell and Pablo Jones-Soler a.k.a Bradley & Pablo, the international creative duo who directed Charli XCX: Alone Together and who have worked on music videos and projects with Lil Nas X, Dua Lipa, Cardi B and many more plus were recently nominated for Best Director at the 2021 US Music Video Awards. We also spoke to JOY’s own Jordan Johnstone who gave his opinion on the film as a long time fan (spoiler alert, he loved it, as did we!).
