As Out Takes is the home of queer cinema on JOY 94.9, it’s only fitting that we dedicated this show to a festival that is on in Melbourne soon with some fabulous films to check out plus an incredible documentary screening at this years Mardi Gras Film Festival.
Through the theme Connections, the 2023 Melbourne Women in Film Festival showcases the best Australian, Aotearoa New Zealand and Pasifika women’s and gender diverse stories on screen and explores creative collaborations and community through a dynamic program for its seventh year from February 23 – 27. We were joined by Dr Sian Mitchell, the Festival Director for the Melbourne Women in Film Festival, who gave us the scoop on what to check out at this year’s festival and much more.
Later in the program we looked at ‘How to Tell A Secret’, a powerfully moving hybrid documentary tackling the stigma people living with HIV face when disclosing their status in present-day Ireland which is screening at this years Mardi Gras Film Festival. We were delighted to have Robbie Lawlor and Enda McGrattan aka Veda on the program who both appear in the film and share their stories of disclosing their HIV status and the impact it’s had on their lives.
