Stories of Love, Loss and Grief: The Last of Us, Spoiler Alert, The Whale and The Son

For this episode of Out Takes, we looked at three new films that look at grief, loss and what comes next for those left behind. We kicled off by talking about the show and a episode of ‘The Last of Us’ that tackled these themes head on, caused a huge buzz around the world and was hailed by the Guardian as “the single best episode of television that will be broadcast this year” and keep in mind, it’s only February.

The first film we looket at was ‘Spoiler Alert’, based on Michael Ausiello’s best-selling memoir. It is a heart-warming/heart-breaking, funny and life-affirming story of how a relationship is transformed and deepened when one of them falls ill with cancer and stars Jim Parsons, Sally Field and Ben Aldridge.

Next up was ‘The Whale’, which follows Charlie, a gay reclusive English teacher with class III obesity played by Brendan Fraser, who’s pain and misery is manifested physically and emotionally due to the death of his partner, which leads to his chronic binge-eating and related health issues. At the same time, Charlie tries to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter played by Sadie Sink for one last chance at redemption.

Finally, we looked at the latest film from Florian Zeller starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby and Anthony Hopkins. ‘The Son’ tells the story of Peter who’s hectic life gets further upended when his ex-wife tells him their teenage son is deeply troubled. He soon tries to take care of himthe same way he would have wanted his own father to have taken care of him with tragic results.
