And the Academy Award goes to…

It’s that time of year again! We don our best tuxedos and sashay red-carpet style into the studio to tender our predictions for this year’s Academy Awards. And there is – more or less – consensus: we agree that while it mightn’t have been the best film of 2015, Alejandro Inarritu’s THE REVENANT is poised to take home the gold, and win for Leonardo DiCaprio his first (and long sought) Oscar.

1988_Academy_AwardsWe’re somewhat more divided when it comes to best performance by a female in a leading role. While Brie Larson leads the race with a Golden Globe and SAG award under her belt, it could equally be Cate’s year. And there’s also Charlotte Rampling to consider. She appeared in Andrew Haigh’s critically acclaimed 45 YEARS. We chat with Haigh about the film, the process that went in to bringing this short story to the big screen and how it’s been so positively received this awards season.

There’s also this, the elephant in the room: this years awards are set to be the ‘whitest’ awards since 1998, with no nominees of colour in any acting category. We take a look at criticism of the awards and ask whether there is any truth to the trending hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.
