The Queer Jewish experience

Gay_Jewish_Float_-_Gay_Pride_in_Tel_Aviv-Yafo_2010To coincide with the upcoming festival of Passover, the Out Takes team revisit some of the most affecting representations of queer Jewish experience. From arresting exposes like ‘TREMBLING BEFORE GOD’ and ‘EYES WIDE OPEN’, which subtly explore Orthodox reckonings of same sex desire, to more whimsical depictions of queer Jewish life – think ‘TRANSPARENT’ and ‘ANGELS IN AMERICA’ – we look at representations of queer Jewish life that collapse the divide between faith and desire.

Along side this powerful retrospective, we chat with Executive Director of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, David Marlow, to better understand how different streams of Judaism have embraced the question of queer desire. We also speak with Monique Schwartz, the director of ‘Beyond Paranoia’, to understand how Jewish life (in many ways, like queer life) is informed by the experience of discrimination and persecution. Beyond Paranoia screens as part of the Holocaust Film Series in early May.
