With World Homelessness Day on October 10 and it also being Seniors Month in October here in Australia, for this Out Takes we took a look at a powerful new documentary that tackles a subject that impacts us all but rarely gets discussed.

We were joined by our special guest Sue Thomson to discuss ‘Under Cover’, her latest film that explores the issue of the 240,000 women over 55 who are at risk of homelessness in Australia. Narrated by Margot Robbie, ‘Under Cover’ introduces us to 10 of these women for whom security and shelter are constant unknowns and who, until now, have suffered in silence. We also discussed Sue’s previous film ‘The Coming Back Out Ball Movie’ which followed a group of older LGBTIQ+ Australians who were invited to attend a Ball celebrating their gender and sexual identity. Faced with the complexities of ageing and isolation, these extraordinary people seized each day with determination and humour.

We also revisited an interview with Dr Catherine Barrett from 2016 to talk about Alice’s Garage, a new venture at the time that was a burgeoning social enterprise empowering older LGBTI people through different activities and online resources.
