The Out Takes guide to MQFF 2022: part 2

There is just too much to talk about at this years Melbourne Queer Film Festival so we took this week to again dive deeper in to the program and discuss some of the films on offer and what we recommend you must-see.

In the not-to-be-missed category is the powerful award winning and critically acclaimed documentary ‘Black As U R’ from US director Micheal Rice who was our very special guest for this program. This fantastic film takes you on a journey through the fault lines of race, gender, history and sexuality in America, focusing on the intersectional lives of black queer people fighting for equality within their own community. ‘Black as U R’ interweaves contemporary racial politics with an autobiographical look into director Michael Rice’s own upbringing in the American south, unearthing the queerphobia prevalent in many black communities. Michael joined us for an in-depth interview to discuss his career, the importance of representation, the power in telling our stories on our own terms plus so much more.

We also previewed some of the cinematic offerings for the 32nd MQFF with reviews of the opening and closing night films, a few of the special feature screenings plus a new Aussie queer flick to check out too.
