This week on Out Takes we dive into the world of local film, taking a look at some of the most recent notable films from emerging Victorian filmmakers and the challenges they face as they try to get their projects off the ground.
To begin, we look at Grant Scicluna’s debut feature film, DOWNRIVER, a slow burn drama about one teen’s journey to redemption. Grant joins us to chat about the challenges he and producer Jannine Barnes faced bringing DOWNRIVER to the screen. After touring the festival circuit for nearly a year, DOWNRIVER has its Australian theatrical release in June.
Then we hear from Paul Ireland about his recent release: PAWNO, the story of 12 Footscray locals told over the course of one chaotic day. Ireland takes us through PAWNO’s journey to the big screen: from putting together a script, to securing funding, to laying down a soundtrack that mirror’s the film’s ‘local’ sensibility.
Essential viewing: Downriver (Dir. Grant Scicluna, 2015).
Hungry for more: Pawno (Dir. Paul Ireland, 2016).
