Reality meets Realness – Queer Documentaries

With the Hot Docs Film Festival drawing to a close, and the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival set to commence, Melbourne is in the throes of documentary fever! So the OUT TAKES team turns its attention to some of the most important queer documentaries – think THE CELLULOID CLOSET and PARIS IS BURNING – documentaries that have redefined the shape of queer culture and had enduring cultural affect.

To help them with this discussion, the team is joined by Flora Georgio, the senior curator of the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival. Flora chats with the team about the necessary ingredients of a good documentary, and the importance of documentary making. The team also speak with some of the film makers showcasing work as part of the festival: Giovanni Coda, whose experimental and very avant-garde BULLIED TO DEATH has its Australian premier with the festival, and Robin Vogel, whose expose on club culture – CLUBCHURCH – takes on new meaning in light of the recent tragedy in Orlando.
